The Regulations
In 1997 the UK Government introduced the Producer Responsibility (Packaging Waste) Regulations. This legislation affects thousands of companies in the UK who use or handle packaging as part of their business operations.
Obligated companies have a legal responsibility to make an assessment of the packaging they introduce to the UK system. Companies must then submit data annually to the Environment Agency and pay a levy, dependent upon the packaging activities performed, to contribute to the cost of recycling packaging waste within the UK.
